2018 Classroom Abroad ‚ÄĒ

September 19 - 30, 2018

A Travel Adventure to Paris and the South of France! (Expired trip. See note below.)

NOTE: The Abbey Studio hosts a Classroom Abroad trip each year or two. The trip described below occurred in the past but we’ve left the description on our website so you can get an impression of our Classroom Abroad trips. If you would like to speak with us about participating in one of our trips in the future, we’d love to hear from you!

This will be a wonderful, exciting trip! We’ll fly together from Boston, Massachusetts to Paris and then spend the next three days in Paris visiting museums, shops, restaurants, and soaking up that glorious French culture.

After that, we’ll travel via TGV (fast train) to the town of Mandelieu in the south of France. We will stay in the 13th-century Ch√Ęteau de la Napoule, situated directly on the Mediterranean, and live as artists in residence for a week before returning to Boston.

Studio Instruction

We‚Äôll spend five mornings in total in the studio where Maryanne Grebenstein, Lead Designer at The Abbey Studio, will teach manuscript gilding and calligraphy. All levels of experience are welcome, and instruction will be customized to your level of expertise. Students in the past have found this environment to be open and stimulating, and have enjoyed the camaraderie and the friendships they’ve developed.

Afternoons Spent Sightseeing

After our lunch break, you can choose how to spend the afternoon: The studio will remain open for independent work time, or you can explore the surrounding area. You can join a group going with Maryanne on selected adventures, or go off on your own. The Ch√Ęteau is across the street from a nice little train station where we can pick up the train traveling along the coast to¬†Monte Carlo, Nice, Cannes, Antibes, San Tropez, and the adorable town of Mandelieu,¬†as well as Ventimiglia, Italy, and many other lovely places, all within a 5- to 40-minute train ride.

Check It Out

We’ve posted some wonderful resources about the fascinating and inspiring La Napoule area. Download a slide show of photos assembled by the Ch√Ęteau de La Napoule here. (You’ll need Microsoft PowerPoint, and it can take a couple of minutes to load, but the results are worth it.) You can also access photos of a previous Abbey Studio trip to La Napoule from The Abbey Studio website here, and you can read two of our blogs about Paris and La Napoule here and here.
