The Poem:

I would very much like / to spend a Wednesday in Marblehead. / Any Wednesday will do / As long as the town house still stands / strong in the middle of the road, / As long as the firehouse still blazes red / and that white house still waves a flag, / As long as Redd's pond (full of history's tears) / still beckons children with ice skates / and red noses in the winter / and patient fisherman & flowers each summer, / As long as the old lighthouse still winks / through the fog at the cold, cold moon . . . / I would very much like to spend / a Wednesday in Marblehead.

The Old Town House really does stand in the middle of the road and it happens to be directly across from The Abbey Studio’s Studio & Shop in Old Town, Marblehead. Marblehead has a tradition of a ‘golden cod’ above the doorways of homes and businesses. It’s a nod to Marblehead’s roots as a fishing village and a ‘thank you’ of sorts to the cod fish, which played such an important part in Marblehead’s early economy. Today, the golden cod is a symbol of good luck and prosperity and it's seen displayed all over the town.
