This is a 12-session workshop in which participants will learn six different calligraphic hands in chronological order as they were used historically. Using traditional tools and historic examples, participants will be guided through the five main broad-edged lettering styles, and one script style (pointed-pen). If you have wanted to expand your calligraphic experience into multiple hands, this is the course for you! We’ll start with Uncial lettering – closely associated with the Celtic culture – then we’ll move on to Carolingian, then next to Gothic (also known as Black Letter), Italic, Copperplate Script, and finally the Foundational Hand. Working to improve technical aspects of the lettering, such as pen angle and letter scale, we will employ the use of beautiful historic manuscripts to study these various lettering styles. $500 plus supplies if needed. Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 8 through March 17, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., US Eastern time (2/8, 2/10, 2/15, 2/17, 2/22, 2/24, 3/1, 3/3, 3/8, 3/10, 3/15, 3/17). After you register, you will receive a separate email with log-in information for the sessions.
