Each year, The Abbey Studio offers one or more art-related adventures. As they are arranged, information will be posted on this web page.

Registration for the 2017 Classroom Abroad trip has ended, but following is the description of the trip, so that you can get an idea of what our trips are like. Until new trips are arranged and posted, please feel free to get in touch with us to ask about our upcoming plans.

A Travel Adventure to the South of France

Classroom Abroad 2017 will depart from Boston, Massachusetts and arrive in Nice, France. We’ll then take a short train ride to Mandelieu la Napoule, France, which is located along one of the most beautiful and famous coasts in existence: Côte d’Azur (the French Riviera). Our accommodations in La Napoule are at the Château de La Napoule, a restored 14th-century French castle on the shores of the Mediterranean.

Studio Instruction

We’ll spend five mornings in total in the studio where Maryanne Grebenstein, Lead Designer at The Abbey Studio, will customize instruction to your level of experience. You’ll be tutored on the fundamentals of calligraphy and the ancient craft of manuscript gilding (illuminating with gold leaf). All levels of experience are welcome.

Afternoons Spent Sightseeing

After our lunch break, you can choose how to spend the afternoon: The studio will remain open for independent work time, or you can explore the surrounding area. You can join a group going with Maryanne on selected adventures, or go off on your own. The château is across the street from a nice little train station where we can pick up the train traveling along the coast to Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Monaco, as well as Ventimiglia, Italy, and many other lovely places, all within a 5- to 40-minute train ride.

Check It Out

We’ve posted some wonderful resources about the fascinating and inspiring La Napoule area. View a PowerPoint slide show of photos assembled by the Château de La Napoule here. You can also access photos of a previous Abbey Studio trip to La Napoule from The Abbey Studio website here, and you can read two blogs about La Napoule here and here.

Add an Optional Weekend in Paris

As an add-on, you can register for a weekend in Paris! We will travel as a group via TGV train on Friday afternoon from Cannes to Paris and stay two nights in the glamorous City of Lights, returning to La Napoule Sunday afternoon/evening. Those who remain at the château will have the option of local sightseeing, spending time at the beach (just next door to the château), or continuing independent work on their calligraphy projects.
