About The Abbey Studio

Hand-2

Welcome to The Abbey Studio’s blog site!

The Abbey Studio is a professional calligraphy studio specializing in beautiful, hand-lettered documents you’ll be thrilled to present. Established in 1982, The Abbey Studio has a studio and shop on Boston’s north shore in Marblehead, Massachusetts, but no matter where you’re located, we can create captivating custom artwork for delivery worldwide. We assure you that you’ll feel amazing giving (or keeping!) the custom, elegant treasures we create for you.

Handmade manuscript books: Our most unique and special creations are one-of-a-kind and limited-edition manuscript books. These books are completely hand-lettered, hand-decorated, and hand-bound. Our books contain poetry, scripture, or prose. We also welcome commissions to create commemorative books for occasions such as a wedding, a birth, a memorial, a retirement, or even a marriage proposal! (Currently we host information about this work on a separate website called Turn in the Path.)

Hand-lettered documents: We create beautiful hand-lettered documents to recognize outstanding achievement, volunteer service, benefactors, retirement, distinguished service, and honorary degrees. We also create custom-designed invitations, personal gifts of prose, poetry, or scripture, and memorials tributes. Using the same materials and techniques that have been employed by scribes for centuries, we transform your words of tribute into a work of art that will be treasured and admired for many years. Organized excursions: We bring small groups of artistically curious, fun people to delightful locales for unique vacations. On the “book trips” we visit museums, libraries, and art foundations within the U.S. and abroad to view illuminated manuscripts. On the “classroom abroad” excursions, we visit beautiful sites and learn calligraphy while we live as artists-in-residence with guided studio time. See the “Trips” page on this site.

Calligraphy classes: For those interested in learning the craft of calligraphy and gold-leaf illumination, we offer courses in our studio classroom and several other locations in New England and Washington, DC. See the “Classes” page on this site, or view them all on a calendar.

The Abbey Studio & Shop in Marblehead, Massachusetts: The Abbey Studio & Shop is a storefront at 84A Washington Street in Marblehead, just a block from the harbor in Old Town. Marblehead is a charming, walkable seaside town and a wonderful place to visit. Shop hours are 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, and by appointment. We hope you’ll come visit! The Studio & Shop is also accessible via MBTA buses 441 and 442 from Government Center (Boston), Wonderland T (Revere), and the Lynn Commuter Rail Station.
